Disability Services

The Office of Disability Services provides academic accommodations and support services, within the resources of the university, to ensure that students with disabilities have the opportunity to competitively pursue a college education.

Disability Services offers such services as:

  • Enlargements, Braille, electronic texts and other technological services for students who are blind or have visual limitations;
  • State-certified interpreters, trained captionists and transcribers, and assistive technology for students who are deaf or hard of hearing;
  • Individual meetings to focus on study, time-management, test-taking and organizational skills for students with learning disabilities;
  • Adjustable tables and seats, back cushions, accessible on-campus transportation, and classroom assistants and scribes for students with physical and mobility-related disabilities;
  • One-on-one support for students with psychological disabilities;
  • Individual support and guidance for students with health-related disabilities.

Student Affairs in a sentence

  • Disability Services employs, on average, 55 students to work as exam proctors, office assistants and academic assistants each year.
  • On average, the Office of Disability Services administers 3,000 accommodated exams each year and provides approximately 500 textbooks in alternative formats.
  • Since 2001, the Office of Disability Services has awarded 85 Frank Hodges Jr. scholarships to students with physical, sensory or health-related disabilities.
