Kathy Murray’s job isn’t a small one. As associate director of the Department of Student Life, she strives to help make the Mizzou student-life experience a positive one. Through managing the campus activities staff in Student Life and coordinating with the Division of Student Affairs, Murray makes it easier for hundreds of staff members to do their jobs.

In recent years, another role Murray has taken on is to make campus safer. In response to requests to expand the annual Fire Factor event, and a survey that indicated students wanted more education on safety and safety practices, Murray formed the Safe Mizzou Coalition. The coalition brings together people from all corners of the community — from Residential Life to the Columbia Fire Department to the Wellness Resource Center to Faculty Council.

“Kathy is like glue,” says Katrina Boles, a senior media producer for Residential Life who collaborates with Murray on the Safe Mizzou Coalition. “She is a natural leader and excels at bringing people together to share ideas to make Mizzou a better place. When she sees a need or gap, she fills it.”

Each fall, the coalition organizes Safe Mizzou Week to educate students on safety issues, such as bystander intervention, crosswalks on College Avenue and fire safety.

“As we all crusade to make campus and Columbia a better place to live, work and play, Kathy is there backing us up with emails, phone calls, and promotion of ideas and solutions,” Boles says. “Things get done because Kathy makes sure they get done.”
