Describe your job.

As a student assistant buyer for the Univeristy of Missouri Stores, I have had the opportunity to select merchandise that we sell in the Zoutique as well as a variety of different collegiate apparel items sold in The Mizzou Store. I also run reports to evaluate purchasing needs and ensure that products in the Zoutique are successful. Making SKUs, or stock keeping units, for each item that comes into the store and creating purchasing orders for new merchandise orders are frequent daily duties that I perform. As an assistant buyer, I've also had the opportunity to help in the design process of certain items in the store.

What is your favorite part of the job?

My favorite part about being a buyer is seeing something that I've chosen for the Zoutique succeed in the store. It's really rewarding to see students around campus wearing the merchandise I've chosen. I enjoy seeing reactions of customers while in the Zoutique as well, I'm always curious about the feedback and want to ensure that we're providing the best merchandise and satisfying the needs of all of our stylish customers!

How have you contributed to a successful work enviornment at your position?

I love working for the university and I try to contribute to a successful work enviornment by having a positive attitude at work and by being helpful and supportive any way I can. It's a team effort.

How has this position prepared you for employment opportunities?

This job has already taught me a great deal about making smart buying decisions and about the importance of paying attention to trends, our target audience and their purchasing patterns. Communicating with our wholesale supplier and companies, as well as taking part in buying meetings has afforded me invaluable insight and experience for the future.

What personal growth have you gained from this job that you feel could benefit others?

This position has helped me realize the importance of teamwork. Although I may choose an item to purchase for the Zoutique, the merchandising of that item once it hits The Mizzou Store sales floor and the customer service provided by The Mizzou Store sales associates are also very important to ensuring that we meet our sales goals and that our end customers are happy with their purchases. Again, it's a team effort and all parts of our interaction with our customers are important.
